Tideswell and Surrounding Area
You will find a folder in the cottage full of maps and information about walks and places of interest.
Whether you are interested in history, geography, walking, cycling, eating out or just relaxing you will find the Peak District has endless possibilities.
From the cottage door you can follow the historical walk around Tideswell (leaflet in the cottage). It is fun to explore the village, which is full of little lanes with cottages and tiny gardens. Visit during the last week in June for Tideswell's Well Dressing Festival – the whole village participates in activities and you will see the most creative decorations on all the houses.
Still on foot you can visit Tideswell Dale, then walk round the Litton Loop and get onto the Monsal Trail. A popular evening for guests is to walk from the cottage to the Red Lion in Litton for dinner and back again (don’t forget to book)!
Millersdale is also near the village and there is excellent walking whether you like rugged peaks or gentle hills. Froggat Edge, Mam Tor, Lady Bower Reservoir, Castleton Caverns... so many places to explore. No surprise that visitors return!
Tideswell Attractions
It is a pleasure to shop in Tideswell where there is a greengrocer, organic butchers, book shop (Peak Volumes), wool and yarn shop (Peak District Yarns - which also offers workshops), chemist, baker and a modern Co-op which is open every day until 10.00pm.
There is one café in Tideswell (Tideswell Lounge) and an Italian restaurant (Sal's Italian).
The Parish Church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, and is known as the ‘Cathedral of the Peaks’.
Try the fresh locally sourced cuisine at the local restaurant/bistro Merchant's Yard.
The nearest Post Office is in the small village shop in Litton (5 mins drive away or a pleasant walk!).
Our Younger Visitors
Children also enjoy staying at Exchange Cottage.
Buxton Pavilion has swimming facilities with a pool for small children, as well as the regular one. The Pavilion is set in very pleasant gardens (with a children's play area) and there is a family friendly cafe.
The more adventuresome who enjoy lively places can make a trip to Matlock Bath and the heights of Abraham. Nearer to home there’s lot to explore in the village itself with a playground at either end of the village.
Visit in spring time and the children will enjoy seeing the lambs in the fields.

Buxton - an old spa town full of history (Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here).
It has an impressive Opera House with a programme throughout the year - make the evening special with a pre-theatre dinner at the St Moritz Restaurant.
The Pavilion Gardens has a swimming pool, as well as a full programme of events throughout the year for the whole family.

Bakewell - famous for it's Bakewell Pudding! A lively town with lots of interesting shops and a river with ducks.
